It is just two days since the Wall Street Journal has reported that Apple will put on the iphone 8 on USB-C instead of lightning. We were skeptical and now there is the resolution that Apple is likely to tread with the iphone 8 as well as the iphone 7s and iphone 7s Plus.
All 2017 iphone models with Lightning and USB-C fast Charging
There is a lot of evidence that Apple will be putting on three new iphone models this year. In addition to the new iphone 8 we reckon with the iphone 7s as well as iphone 7s Plus. In part, the models are based on the same technologies and are fundamentally different from each other.
One feature that will be identical is the Lightning port with USB fast charging technology. After the WSJ put a USB-C port on the iphone 8 into play, the usually well-informed analyst Ming Chi Kuo is now speaking. This one should give an open ear.
New 2H17 models may all support fast charging. We believe all three new iphones launching in 2H17 will support fast charging by the adoption ofUsb type-Cpower delivery technology (while still retaining the Lightning port). A key technical challenge lies with ensuring product safety and stable data transmission during a fast charge. In order to achieve that goal, we think Apple will adopt TI’s power management and Cypress’s power delivery chip solutions for the new iphone models. We note the OLED version may have a faster-charging speed thanks to a 2-cell L shaped battery pack design.
According to Kuo, Apple will be installing a lightning connection on all new 2017 iphone models. At the same time, Apple will rely on new internal components that enable the benefits of USB-C fast charging. The physical plug will therefore not change. Among other things, Apple will use the appropriate chips for power management at Texas Instruments and Cypress.
According to the analyst, there are two reasons why Apple will remain loyal to the Lightning connection. On the one, there would be the large offer of MFI accessories and the associated royalties and the form factor of lightning. Lightning is less than USB-C in its construction.
In general, Apple is expected to present the iphone 8 in the autumn of this year. Among other things, Apple should set this device to a 5.8-inch display, an improved camera system, a more powerful processor and wireless charging.
